Performance index figure is calculated per rider per race and used
by the seeding committee in assisting them to place riders in the
correct racing groups according to their abilities. This figure is
only a guideline, as it is not an exact science because there are
many factors that influance this figure. A performance figure
obtained in Masters and Ladies races cannot be compared to the
National Seeding index because our races vary in distance whereas
the National Seeding Index is only taken for races over 100km in
length. The same formula is used in Masters and Ladies races as
the National Seeding Index.
Performance index is
calculated using the following formula:
100 / (Winners Time / Riders Actual Time x 100)
A performance index is
calculated for members only that have completed 3 or more races. The
race you performed the worst in is taken out of the calculation to
compensate for the bad race where punctures or poor performance has had
an influence on your result.
The Club handicap system was devised to level the
performances of male and female riders of different ages and
ability, and thus give each person some chance at winning a
place in his/her race category at the end of each racing
season. The system is not perfect, but is the best the Club
can offer under our current racing conditions. The number of
variables affecting each group's performance is
considerable, as indeed are individual performances within
each group by means of the Performance Index calculation.
The seeding of riders from "A" through to
"H" for beginners or visitors, is merely a
considered guess. Established riders are seeded according to
their current performance index, but all competitors are
moved about from group to group during the season as they
improve/decline. The handicapping system is, therefore, a
living system and can never be perfected to everybody's
satisfaction.
